Book Review: Earn What You’re REALLY Worth

Brian Tracy helps you learn how to figure out what you're really worth — and then boost your earnings to reflect that.

How many of us wish we could be paid more? I think most of us want to earn more money, equating money with happiness, and assuming that things would be easier with more money. Others of us just want to be appreciated for our work, earning what we think that we are worth. No matter your situation, the key is figuring out how much you're really worth and then going out and getting paid. In his book, Earn What You're Really Worth: Maximize Your Income at Any Time in Any Market, Brian Tracy shows you how to go about doing just that.

Are You Earning What You're Worth?

Brian Tracy starts out by encouraging you to take responsibility for your current income. The introduction is titled, “You Have Chosen Your Currency Income.” I really like the element of personal responsibility that Tracy emphasizes throughout the book. He works to get you to realize that you do have control over how much you make, and the income level you choose. He points out that:

You have decided to earn this amount as a result of your actions and your inactions. There are specific actions you have taken to get your income to the point where it is today.

Tracy then goes on to highlight what you can do to earn more money, remaking yourself into the person you want to be. Don't think that this is a “get rick quick” book that proclaims easy money through wishful thinking. Tracy is very clear that it takes hard work, and skills development, if you want to earn more money. He points out that if you are earning less than you think you're worth, it's on you to showcase your value, and prove that you really do deserve that raise or promotion.

Practical Skills for Improving Your Income

Earn What You're Really Worth focuses on helping you build practical skills for the future. Tracy helps you learn tips and techniques that work in the real world to help you boost your productivity, as well as methods to help you discover what you can offer others. He also provides helpful techniques that can help you better organize your life and your time so that you are maximizing your earning potential at every stage of your career. Some of the things this book walks you through include:

  • Defining your values
  • Setting career goals and objectives
  • Effective interviewing
  • Better project management
  • Creating a better first impression
  • Distinguishing between what's important and what isn't
  • Effective problem solving
  • Recognizing and capitalizing on your strengths

Remember that you have human capital to offer. You have the ability to improve yourself, and to improve your income. Brian Tracy's book not only provides you with insights and step-by-step instructions, but it also offers action exercises that help you put what you're learning into practice. Earn What You're Really Worth is an interesting and fast-paced read that can help you from a practical standpoint as well as from a theoretical standpoint.
